BRAKING TECHNOLOGY - THE HIGHEST POTENTIAL IN ACCIDENT AVOIDANCE AND MITIGATION

Continuous efforts in the field of passive vehicle safety as well as infrastructure measures and improvements in emergency medicine have reduced the number of fatally and seriously injured persons in traffic accidents substantially over time. Nevertheless the effects of further passive safety measures or their improvements are limited and active safety systems that are able to avoid or mitigate accidents become more and more important. Many of these active safety systems use warnings or autonomous actions to optimize the braking efficiency.
The paper shows the high potential of braking technology in terms of accident avoidance and mitigation in real world accidents. The first part of the paper shows the general relevance of braking in all kinds of accidents on the basis of the GIDAS (German In-Depth Accident Study) database. The database currently contains more than 21.000 reconstructed accidents with about 3.400 parameters per accident. Out of these cases all accidents involving cars, trucks and motorcycles were chosen for the analysis. The analysis shows on the one hand the potential of braking if the maximum braking power due to the road conditions would be used and on the other hand the potential for a timely warning of the driver due to a critical situation. Furthermore, a detailed analysis of the braking behaviour, braking strength as well as the road conditions, e.g. micro- and macro-roughness, was done.
Afterwards, detailed analyses of real-world accidents and the influence of braking technology were done to demonstrate the influence of autonomous braking or a driver warning in the single case. Therefore detailed simulations of real accident scenarios will be presented. System operating modes as well as sensor algorithms can be implemented in these prospective analyses. The results of the simulation can be used for the comparison of different braking technologies or for further optimizations of the system itself.
Out of the studies it can be stated what the main causes for inefficient braking are and how braking technology and systems could help to avoid or mitigate real world accidents.
