Naturalistic Driving Study - NDS

Naturalistic Driving Study (NDS)

Naturalistic driving studies investigate real traffic situations and provide useful information for critical events, (near-) crashes as well as normal driving in mixed traffic situations. Furthermore, the driving behavior of drivers can be analyzed by such studies. The derived information have a great importance for the system conception of (partially) automated driving functions and ADAS. In addition, the knowledge about the normal/average driving behavior in real traffic situations can be used to tune driving functions and safety systems towards a high level of user acceptance.

VUFO NDS

A large amount of data is necessary for robust analyses of real driving scenarios. Therefore, VUFO is using an application for mobile devices as investigation tool (figure 1). With the app and the following data analyses it is possible to detect and analyze driver profiles, driving behavior, accident spots, near-crashes and critical situations as well as crash scenarios. Additionally, further information about the type of vehicle, the purpose of the trip or psychological factors can be collected and analyzed. The application provides several modes to do different kinds of studies: For example, you can record driving data through a permanent measurement, trigger based (GPS points, acceleration limits) or manual recording about a button press.

NDS-Database

The datasets of naturalistic driving data (NDD) will be categorize and transfer into a large datasource, which provides driving behavior and real driving scenarios in detail. This includes turning events, vehicle movements on acceleration or braking, taking bends, types of road, critical situations and noise inside the car. The NDD can be transferred in a simulation environment and available as simulation files in the NDS database.
