The “Road Traffic Accident Investigation at the TU Dresden GmbH” was established in October 2005. It is a 100% subsidiary of the TU Dresden AG (TUDAG). The VUFO emerged from a spin-off company based on a third party funded project „GIDAS“ (German Accident In-Depth Study), which was worked on by Professorship „Vehicle and Drive Technology“ at the Combustion Engine and Vehicles Institute from July 1999 to September 2005.
The interdisciplinary team, which was established and managed by Prof Dr-Ing habil Horst Brunner (IVK) and Prof Dr med Hans Zwipp (Clinic for Trauma and Reconstructive Surgery at the University Clinic „Carl Gustav Carus” at the TU Dresden) in Dresden, has been one of the two teams collecting data for the well-respected GIDAS Project. Both professors presided as managing directors of the VUFO until 2012. Then, the management was transferred to Dr Lars Hannawald. When he was appointed professor for Automotive Engineering and Vehicle Safety at the Hochschule für Technik und Wirtschaft (HTW) Dresden, Henrik Liers took over the executive board in 2017.
Since the spin-off, in addition to the GIDAS Project, the VUFO has increasingly worked on national and international research projects. In the meantime, the clientèle of the VUFO comprises of all well-known German automotive manufacturers and sub-contractors, in addition to authorities, ministries, universities and research institutions. The VUFO also brings its expertise in the field of road and vehicle safety to an international level. The number of projects and studies worked on the VUFO has already accumulated to more than 450 since our 15 years of existence.
In 2013 the VUFO initiated the postgraduate degree course „Vehicle Safety and Road Traffic Accident Research“, which is unique in Germany, together with the Dresden International University (DIU). Furthermore, the VUFO has gradually been developing our advanced trainings and training courses. In the meantime, the VUFO also been successfully working as an organiser of seminars.
