Employee of VUFO checking EDR Data

Reading Vehicle Data

In the event of an accident, modern vehicles store technical data in their accident data recorder, the Event Data Recorder (EDR). VUFO retrieves this vehicle data using certified equipment, making previously undisclosed accidents objectively and transparently visible—especially when purchasing used cars or returning leased vehicles.

What We Retrieve for You

Information about repairs or cosmetic touch-ups is often retained in the vehicle’s accident data memory. Paint inspections and visual inspections reach their limits here.

VUFO uses certified equipment to read the electronic vehicle data stored in the accident data recorder and documents the results in a neutral readout report. This provides you with reliable technical evidence of whether any accident events are stored in the vehicle and, if so, which ones.

What the Event Data Recorder Records—and What It Doesn't

Reading an Event Data Recorder (EDR) from the outside of a vehicle that has been totaled

The crash data recorder only records an event when the ignition is on and only if a technical threshold is exceeded.

Not every entry represents an accident: Critical situations such as an emergency braking maneuver or a loss of stability due to understeer or oversteer can also be recorded. We distinguish collisions from such critical events based on the recorded changes in force and speed. Low-speed accidents, however—such as those occurring at walking speed—may not be recorded under certain circumstances. Only after the data is retrieved can we see exactly what has been stored.

When a vehicle can be read

Whether your vehicle can be read depends on the manufacturer and model. Reading the crash data recorder is only possible for vehicles supported by a maintained list of vehicle models. We’d be happy to check in advance whether your vehicle is supported and assess whether reading the data from your vehicle is possible and advisable.

Does my vehicle have an accident data recorder?

For newly registered passenger cars and light commercial vehicles in the EU, the Event Data Recorder (EDR) has been mandatory since July 7, 2024; for new vehicle models, it has been mandatory since July 2022.

Some manufacturers have been installing it for quite some time, and these vehicles can also be read. Whether your vehicle has a readable EDR therefore depends on the manufacturer, model, and model year.

Therefore, when submitting your inquiry, please include the manufacturer, model, date of first registration, and, if possible, the vehicle identification number (VIN), and we will check this for you in advance.

Your Experts in Retrieving Vehicle Data

Reading and interpreting vehicle data are part of VUFO’s daily work. As a traffic accident research organization, we conduct approximately 1,000 accident reconstructions each year and are deeply involved in the GIDAS research project. We use only certified equipment for data retrieval.

This level of technical expertise ensures that our data analysis and technical classification are reliable. If you have any questions about the data analysis for your vehicle, please feel free to contact us.

Technical Findings & Legal Assessment

Our service consists of technically retrieving vehicle data and providing a data retrieval report. Upon request, we can also provide a technical interpretation of the retrieved data—that is, an explanation of what the stored event actually indicates.

This technical classification is expressly not an expert opinion, an expert statement, or a legal assessment of a specific case. The legal assessment of any potential claims is left to you and your legal counsel.

Consulting on Retrieving Vehicle Data

Would you like to implement the retrieval of electronic vehicle data in your company or fleet on your own? We’ll advise you on the equipment and processes you’ll need and guide you through setting up a reliable and traceable data retrieval process.

In addition, we train your staff on how to use the technology and interpret the data. You can find an overview of the available courses in our training program on reading electronic vehicle data.
